KITKA: Ščedryk & A v Jerusalime (Live)

Kitka’s Daily Wintersongs Offering for December 16, 2020

Two Slavic Holiday Carols

ŠČEDRYK (SONG OF GOOD CHEER)

Ukraine, arr. M. Leontovich

When Ukraine became independent in 1918, its government sent the Ukrainian Republican A Cappella Choir, directed by Alexander Koshetz out into the world as its international goodwill ambassador. This ščedrivka (Epiphany/New Year’s carol), set by the Ukrainian composer M. Leontovich, was part of the choir’s touring repertoire. By the 1930s the tune had become a classic throughout North America. The American school teacher, Peter Wilhousky, wrote some English lyrics, transforming this song into the ever-popular Carol of the Bells.

“Song of good cheer! A swallow is here chirping her song, calling to the master of the house: “Come out, Master, and take a look at your manger.” The sheep have mated, and little lambs have been born. If your animals stay healthy, you will have a pot of money. Should your money turn to chaff, you still have a good-looking wife! Song of good cheer, a swallow is here.”

Special thanks to Mariana Sadovska and Michael Alpert for text and translation assistance.

A V JERUSALIME

Ukraine/South Russia, arr. Valentina Georgievskaja

“In Jerusalem, the bells rang early.

Refrain: Rejoice! Oh, Earth, rejoice and celebrate! The Son of God, God is born!

Three holy days will visit you.

The first holy day is holy Christmas.

The second holy day is Saint Basil’s Day.

The third holy day is Holy Epiphany.

And to everyone, with these words, be healthy!

And for these mistakes, we ask for chocolates!”
