Water: A Vocal Workshop with Mahsa Vahdat

Persian vocalist, master teacher, and cultural activist Mahsa Vahdat leads a vocal workshop with song texts inspired by the nature of water.

About this Event

The elemental power and presence of water has inspired wonder in poets, musicians, artists, and scientists since the beginning of human consciousness. Water is a timeless symbol and messenger of purity, fertility, life, joy, light, renewal, and refreshment. The source of life itself, it is also a potent symbol and substance for transformation and metamorphosis.

Water can give life and it can take it away. Water has not only practical importance in our lives but also a profound spiritual role and utility in many rituals and religions across cultures from ancient times until the present.

In Iranian culture, water is an essential element in architecture, art and music, and many other aspects of life. In Persian gardens, mosques, and palaces, pools of water reflect the sky and remind those who gaze into them of paradise.

The sound of water comforts the heart and the flow of it reminds us that life is a stream of passing moments. Water is also the symbol of resilience in its ability to find its way around obstacles. Water can extinguish destructive flames. In times of grief and in times of joy, water is an essential need.

In this workshop, Mahsa Vahdat will choose song texts related to water and its role from the treasury of Persian poetry. The nature of water will also inspire our vocal expression as we explore its fluid, revealing, transformative, and transparent qualities.

A link to the online workshop will be provided upon registration.
